Part Design
Check part features that affect its design for manufacturability (DFM), and measure the compatibility of part requirements against the selected casting process.

  • Minimum thickness - possible cold shuts
  • Maximum thickness - possible shrinkage porosity
  • Rapid thickness transition - possible hot tears
  • Hole dimensions - core distortion and breakage
  • Shape complexity - high tooling cost
Thickness Hole identification core Manufacturability index

The part-process compatibility index provides an early warning to designers about potential problems. The compatibility can be improved by selecting a better process or modifying the part features in line with process capabilities.

Deconstructing a casting

Even the most complex castings are made up of sections that can be recognised as an 'L', 'V', 'T', 'Y', 'K' or 'X'. The number, thickness and angle of the walls meeting at a junction affects its solidification time, and thereby its quality and mechanical properties. With AutoCAST-X, you can visualise the progress of solidification in each junction, and modify the methods design, or even part design, if necessary.
