This cast iron turbine casing showed a small shrinakge porosity at an internal junction during inspection, which was not appararent during tooling design and casting. Simulation of the methods design used in foundry immediately revealed the cause as an undersize feeder. Applying an insulating sleeve, without any other change in tool design eliminated the defect.
